Star Wars: Rey’s parentage changed multiple times during production, says Daisy Ridley

September 10, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Daisy Ridley, who played Rey in the Star Wars Sequel Trilogy, has revealed that her character’s parentage changed multiple times during the development and production of The Force Awakens, The Last Jedi, and The Rise of Skywalker.

During an interview with Josh Gad on Jimmy Kimmel Live, Ridley was asked if she knew Rey’s parentage from the beginning of Episode 7 before admitting that the script kept changing her character’s backstory.

“No. At the beginning, there was toying with an Obi-Wan connection, and then – there were, like, different versions. And then it really went to that she was no one. And then it came to Episode IX, and J.J. pitched me the film and was like, ‘Oh yeah, Palpatine’s your grandaddy,’ and I was like, ‘Awesome.’ And then two weeks later he was like, ‘Oh, we’re not sure’. So it kept changing, so then filming and I wasn’t sure what the answer was going to be.”

Ridley isn’t the only Star Wars cast member who has recently been looking back at the Sequel Trilogy as John Boyega has said he has no interest in returning as the Stormtrooper turned Resistance hero Finn in the future.
