Home Alone director Chris Columbus offers his thoughts on the upcoming reboot, says “it’s a waste of time”

November 13, 2020 by Liam Waddington

Last year, Disney CEO Bob Iger announced that Disney would be rebooting several movie franchises including Home Alone for their streaming service, Disney+, and now, the Home Alone and Home Alone 2: Lost in New York director Chris Columbus has revealed his thoughts on the upcoming re-imagining.

In a recent interview with Insider, Columbus stated that not only was he not contacted by the studio about rebooting Home Alone but he also thinks “it’s a waste of time” considering the popularity and longevity of the first two films.

“No, nobody got in touch with me about it, and it’s a waste of time as far as I’m concerned,” Columbus explained. “What’s the point? I’m a firm believer that you don’t remake films that have had the longevity of Home Alone. You’re not going to create lightning in a bottle again. It’s just not going to happen. So why do it? It’s like doing a paint-by-numbers version of a Disney animated film — a live-action version of that. What’s the point? It’s been done. Do your own thing. Even if you fail miserably, at least you have come up with something original.”

Although there will be some people who agree with Columbus’ comments, it seems like Disney won’t be stopping their recent record of rebooting or remaking anytime soon as not only are they continuing to produce the live-action remakes of their classic animated films, but they have also confirmed they will be reimagining Night at the Museum, Cheaper by the Dozen, and Diary of a Wimpy Kid for Disney+.

The Home Alone reboot is set to be directed Dan Mazer (Dirty Grandpa) from a script by Mikey Day and Streeter Seidell. The movie is being produced by Hutch Parker and Dan Wilson and will be the first project to be produced under the Twentieth Century Fox banner for the Disney+ streaming service.

The cast is set to feature Jojo Rabbit star Archie Yates as the film’s protagonist alongside Ellie Kemper (The Office) and Rob Delaney (Deadpool 2) will portray his parents. However, it has been confirmed that Yates will not be playing Kevin McCallister, but a new character in a similar premise to the original franchise.

The original 1990 film follows Kevin, played by Macaulay Culkin, who is accidentally left behind while his family heads to Paris over the holidays. During that time, he must protect his house from a pair of burglars, played by Joe Pesci and Daniel Stern.
