Why Nomadland Misses the Mark | Video Review

December 5, 2020 by EJ Moreno

Nomadland, 2020.

Directed by Chloe Zhao.
Starring Frances McDormand, David Strathairn, Linda May, Charlene Swankie, and Bob Wells.

A frontrunner at the upcoming Academy Awards, Nomadland has critics buzzing. But our host EJ Moreno doesn’t connect with the film and why dives into all the reasons why. With its mixed messages concerning capitalism and the damage it caused to the nomad community, it’s hard to get fully invested. Still, there’s enough of a great performance from Frances McDormand that will carry the film to the award season.

Following the economic collapse of a town in rural Nevada, Fern (Frances McDormand) packs her van and sets off on the road exploring a life outside of conventional society as a modern-day nomad. The third feature film from director Chloé Zhao, NOMADLAND, features real nomads Linda May, Swankie and Bob Wells as Fern’s mentors and comrades in her exploration through the vast landscape of the American West.

Nomadland is currently in a one-week virtual release and is scheduled to be theatrically released in the United States on February 19th, 2021, by Searchlight Pictures.
