It was a huge win for diversity at the 27th Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on Sunday night, with the late great Chadwick Boseman winning Best Leading Male for his performance in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, a feat matched by his co-star Viola Davis, who took home female actor for her role in the Netflix film.
Yuh-Jung Youn boosted her chances of having her name read out for Best Supporting Actress at the Academy Awards by winning the SAG equivalent for her wonderful performance in Minari, while Daniel Kaluuya added another supporting actor award to the growing list of accolades for his portrayal of Fred Hampton in Judas and the Black Messiah.
The prize considered to be one of biggest indicators as to who might take home the Best Picture Oscar at the 93rd Academy Awards went to The Trial of the Chicago 7, which beat Da 5 Bloods, Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Minari, and One Night in Miami to the Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture gong.
On the small screen, the categories were dominated by The Crown, which walked off with Best Ensemble in a Drama Series and Best Female Actor for Gillian Anderson’s portrayal of Margaret Thatcher, while Schitt’s Creek took the comedy equivalents.
