Amazon orders TV adaptation of Neil Gaiman’s Anansi Boys

July 26, 2021 by Gary Collinson

THR is reporting that Neil Gaiman’s 2005 fantasy novel Anansi Boys is following in the footsteps of American Gods, Good Omens and the upcoming The Sandman with a TV adaptation courtesy of Amazon Prime Video, which has given the green light to a six-episode limited series.

Anansi Boys follows Charlie Nancy, “a young man who is used to being embarrassed by his estranged father. But when his father dies, Charlie discovers that his father was Anansi: trickster god of stories. And he learns that he has a brother. Now his brother, Spider, is entering Charlie’s life, determined to make it more interesting, but also making it a lot more dangerous.”

The character of Anansi – a.k.a. Mr. Nancy – was previously portrayed by Orlando Jones in Starz’s American Gods, although this project will have no connection to that series and is being described as “stand-alone”.

Gaiman is set to serve as co-showrunner on Anansi Boys alongside Good Omens director Douglas Mackinnon, and will also write the scripts by Lenny Henry, who has previously narrated the audio book and voices both Anansi and Spider in BBC Radio adaptations. Filming is set to get underway in Scotland later this year.
