Taika Waititi says his upcoming Star Wars film follows his distinct style

August 12, 2021 by EJ Moreno

Since the moment the project was announced, fans have been curious about what Taika Waititi will do in the world of Star Wars. Many wondered if he could bring new life to the long-running saga, and it seems like he is planning on just that.

In a recent interview with Wired, the filmmaker offered the first significant update about his Star Wars film, stating that:

“It’s still in the ‘EXT. SPACE’ stage. But we’ve got a story. I’m really excited by it because it feels very me. I tend to go down that little sincerity alleyway in my films. I like to fool the viewer into thinking ‘ha it’s this’ and then them going, ‘Damn it, you made me feel something!’”

Waititi is currently in post-production Thor: Love and Thunder, his second MCU film following 2017’s Thor: Ragnarok. The filmmaker is quite the busy worker these days as just this week he appears as the main villain in Free Guy and cameos in The Suicide Squad. On the small screen, he is also executive producing the series Reservation Dogs and a third season of What We Do in the Shadows, as well as starring as Blackbeard in HBO’s upcoming pirate comedy Our Flag Means Death.

Waititi also remains attached to a live-action Akira film, which he notes to Wired that he’s “still trying” to make and doesn’t want to “give up on that.”
