Jungle Cruise 2 officially in the works with Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt returning

August 30, 2021 by EJ Moreno

As the film crosses $100 million dollars at the domestic box office this  past weekend, Jungle Cruise is getting a sequel.

Yes, Disney will go down the river again in this film based on one of their most popular rides as Jungle Cruise 2 is officially in the works, says The Hollywood Reporter.

Returning for the sequel are the film’s stars Dwayne Johnson and Emily Blunt. Johnson starred in the 2021 film as wisecracking skipper Frank Wolff, while Blunt co-led the film as researcher Dr. Lily Houghton. No word if Jack Whitehall will return in the role of MacGregor Houghton, the openly gay younger brother of Blunt’s Lily.

THR reports that director Jaume Collet-Serra is expected to return, along with the film’s producing team of John Davis, John Fox, Beau Flynn, Johnson, Dany Garcia, and Hiram Garcia. Michael Green, who co-wrote the first film, is also on board again.

Jungle Cruise proved to be a surprise hit in the pandemic era, with  A- Cinemascore and a 92 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film opened with $35 million at the domestic box office and more than $30 million in Disney+ Premier Access in its first three days. It has since reached $187 million at the worldwide box office.

Collet-Serra is fresh off helming Warner Bros. and DC Films’ Black Adam, which also stars Dwayne Johnson in the role of the DC Comics antihero. It is set for release on July 29th 2022.
