Nicolas Cage saddles up for his first Western with The Old Way

September 9, 2021 by Matt Rodgers

Fresh off the back of some of his best career notices for Pig (read our ★★★★★ here), Nic Cage has decided to keep things rustic and saddle up with his first conventional Western film The Old Way.

Deadline reports that The Old Way will be directed by Brett Donowho (Acts of Violence) and feature Cage as Colton Briggs, a former gunslinger who now runs a general store and lives quietly with his family. When a gang of outlaws murders his wife in cold blood, Briggs returns home to find his world burning. He unearths his sidearm and saddles up with an unlikely partner: his twelve-year-old daughter.

Cage has clearly developed a love for the genre, having also signed on to star in Butcher’s Crossing, an adaptation of the acclaimed novel by John Williams, first published in 1960. A frontier epic about an Ivy League drop-out as he travels to the Colorado wilderness, where he joins a team of buffalo hunters on a journey that puts his life and sanity at risk.

On the Western one-two, Cage told Deadline “After 43 years in cinema, I’m only now being invited to the important and storied genre of the Western with both The Old Way and Butcher’s Crossing,” he continued “Being born and raised in the West, this is another good match and long overdue. I’m excited and compelled by the complex characters of both Briggs and Miller, and to find new ground to play at 57 is indeed galvanizing.”
