Sony dates two mystery Spider-Man Universe Marvel movies for 2023

October 26, 2021 by Gary Collinson

Sony Pictures has set release dates for two further instalments in its fledgling Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, with the studio laying claim to June 23rd, 2023 and October 6th, 2023 for a pair of mystery Marvel movies.

The recently rechristened Sony’s Spider-Man Universe (formerly known as Sony Pictures Universe of Marvel Characters) is a shared superhero universe launching with 2018’s Venom and taking in this month’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage. Tom Hardy’s symbiote will also soon by joined by Jared Leto’s Living Vampire with January’s 2022’s Morbius, and the studio also has a Kraven the Hunter film set for January 2023 with Aaron Taylor-Johnson in the lead role.

At this point, there’s no indication as to what Sony has planned for the dates, but the studio does have a number of additional Spidey-themed spinoff projects in the works including Madame Webb from director S.J. Clarkson (Jessica Jones) along with a Jackpot movie scripted by Marc Guggenheim (Arrow). A third Venom movie could also be a possibility following solid box office for Let There Be Carnage, which has earned over $350 million so far – a not insignificant sum in the COVID landscape.

It’s also worth noting that Sony’s current deal with Disney over Spider-Man is nearing its end; the contract extension signed after Spider-Man: Far From Home called for one more solo movie – December’s Spider-Man: No Way Home – along with an additional appearance in another Marvel Studios movie. This could of course be extended, but given that Sony has rebranded its cinematic universe around the web-slinger, one has to assume that the studio has plans to bring him over, and presumably won’t be waiting around once it becomes a possibility.

So, could we be looking at Sony Spider-Man movie in 2023? That may be a stretch, but the studio surely won’t want the wall-crawler off screen for more than a couple of years, so it can’t be discounted either at this point.
