Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo land roles in Jon M. Chu’s Wicked

Universal have landed two musical heavyweights for their adaptation of Broadway smash-hit Wicked with the news that Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo have been cast in Jon M. Chu’s movie.

According to Deadline, Erivo will play Elphaba, while Grande will portray Glinda, with the two announcing the news via their Instagram accounts.

Harriet star Erivo has a shelf full of awards and has recently released her debut solo album, as well as getting another Emmy-nomination for her portrayal of Aretha Franklin in National Geographic’s Genius: Aretha, while Grande brings a record-breaking pop-career and a debut feature film appearance in Adam McKay’s Don’t Look Up for Netflix.

Wicked saw a national tour and multiple international productions, being seen by over 60 million people worldwide, making it one of the most successful theatrical ventures of all time. It’s also an acclaimed show, winning over 100 international awards, including the Grammy Award and three Tony Awards.
