Apple TV+ made history at the 94th Academy Awards last night as CODA became the first streaming film to win the Oscar for Best Picture, scooping the top prize ahead of frontunner The Power of the Dog and fellow nominees Don’t Look Up, Drive My Car, Dune, King Richard, Licorice Pizza, Nightmare Alley and West Side Story.
The Sian Heder-directed film took home all three awards for which is was nominated, with Troy Kotsur named Best Supporting Actor and Heder receiving Best Adapted Screenplay. However, CODA’s success was overshadowed somewhat by Will Smith, the King Richard star grabbing headlines not for his Best Actor win, but for assaulting host Chris Rock after taking exception to a joke about his wife, Jada Pinkett-Smith.
The Power of the Dog may have missed out on Best Picture, but Jane Campion did receive the Oscar for Best Director, while other winners including Jessica Chastain (Best Actress for The Eyes of Tammy Faye), Ariana DeBose (Best Supporting Actress for West Side Story), Kenneth Branagh (Best Original Screenplay for Belfast), Encanto (Best Animated Feature) and Drive My Car (Best International Feature Film). Denis Villenueve’s Dune meanwhile picked up six awards in total across the technical categories.
