Johnny Depp to direct Modigliani, will produce with Al Pacino

August 18, 2022 by Gary Collinson

Having got himself back in front of the camera for the first time in three years for Maïwenn’s Jeanne du Barry, Johnny Depp is not returning to the director’s chair for a biopic of Italian artist Amedeo Modigliani.

As per Deadline, Modigliani will hronicle the life of the Italian artist across a turbulent and eventful 48 hours in Paris in 1916. Depp is set to direct from a script by Jerzy and Mary Kromolowski, based upon a play by Dennis McIntyre, and he will also produce the film with his Donnie Brasco co-star Al Pacino.

Depp has only previously directed one feature, 1997’s The Brave, which also saw him starring alongside Marlon Brando. As yet, there’s now word as to whether he’ll also appear in Modigliani.

Modigliani becomes the latest step for Depp in his attempts to revive his career following a self-described Hollywood boycotting owing to his legal battles with ex-wife Amber Heard. A 2023 shoot is being targeted.
