John Wick director Chad Stahelski is trying to figure out the “why” for Chapter 5

July 5, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Chad Stahelski knows fans are torn about having another John Wick movie, and the director is on the fence just as much as the fandom. In a recent interview with Empire Magazine, the filmmaker dove into all things John Wick, even discussing a possible fifth entry.

“I honestly don’t know,” he tells Empire. “Lionsgate is keen on doing more John Wick stuff, understandably. It’s not a bad thing for a director to have a property that they want to make more of. I don’t have a take right now. But I could wake up tomorrow and have a cool idea that I’d pitch to Keanu, or he would pitch to me, and it might hit that chord of, ‘Oh my God, we got to do this right now.'”

Stahelski discusses the possibility of a John Wick entry without him, “I keep a really open mind. If somebody I’ve never met before walks in that door and lays down this pitch, it’d be worth the talk. But I’m very selfish and jealous. I’m a control freak. I want to smack you just for suggesting it. [Laughs] Like, how dare you? Of course, I want to do it.”

Alas, even if things aren’t certain, he adds, “Now we’ve done the four and completed the circle, so to speak, I think it’s pretty good closure for the series. And then there’s the competitor, or the real director in me who goes, ‘Fuck it, let’s just see if we can do it.’ It’s very appealing. I just don’t have the ‘why’ yet. But that doesn’t mean we should stop looking.”

While it remains to be seen whether we’ll get a John Wick: Chapter 5, the franchise is set to expand with the prequel limited series The Continental, which premieres on Peacock in September, along with the Ana de Armas-led spinoff movie Ballerina, slated for release next year.

“John Wick (Keanu Reeves) uncovers a path to defeating the High Table. But before he can earn his freedom, Wick must face off against a new enemy with powerful alliances across the globe and forces that turn old friends into foes.”

John Wick: Chapter 4 is once again directed by Chad Stahelski and stars Keanu Reeves as John Wick, Lance Reddick as Charon, Ian McShane as Winston, and Laurence Fishburne as The Bowery King. Newcomers to the franchise include Donnie Yen (Ip Man), Japanese-British pop singer Rina Sawayama, Hiroyuki Sanada (Army of the Dead), Marko Zaror (From Dusk Till Dawn: The Series), Shamier Anderson (Wynonna Earp), Bill Skarsgård (It: Chapter Two), Scott Adkins (The Bourne Ultimatum) and Clancy Brown (The Shawshank Redemption).
