David Ayer isn’t giving up on Suicide Squad Director’s Cut, teases James Gunn blessing

August 8, 2023 by EJ Moreno

Suicide Squad came out in the summer of 2016, and believe it or not, it changed DC Studios forever.

The film’s reception, along with the now infamous-studio meddling, led to a very polarizing film and shifted the course of all things DC for many years. For fans and filmmakers, this is a film we can’t escape. One of those people is director David Ayer, and he’s getting honest about what he needs to do about this Task Force X-sized mission.

Taking to the social media platform formally known as Twitter, the director gets candid about this passion project. He posts in response to someone asking why he’d promote an Ayer Cut of Suicide Squad after all this time:

“What’s your advice on how to navigate this situation with grace? There’s a genuine curiosity and interest from a lot of people. And I’m aware there is another group of people that have fun mocking the film. Your comment is a perfect example of how many are magnetically drawn to the 2016 film in a negative way. Have you ever had an experience in life that didn’t until the way you wanted, that dragged you, that made you rethink everything? I have.”

One of the more intriguing comments from this recent social media rant is when Ayer mentioned DC Studios co-chair James Gunn offered a space for this film cut somewhere in the future.

He notes, “All I know is my unseen film plays much better than the studio release. The interest in my cut being show seems real and organic. And Gunn told me it would have it’s time to be shared. He absolutely deserves to launch to launch his DC universe without more drama about old projects. In a way, I’m chained to this thing. I’m riding a tiger here and navigating this situation the best I can. Life is a very strange journey.”

There’s been no comment on a Suicide Squad Director’s Cut from Warner Bros. or DC Studios. Neither the studio nor Gunn’s rep was available for comment.
