‘Peaches’ from The Super Mario Bros. Movie fails to make Oscars shortlist

December 22, 2023 by EJ Moreno

With its viral success and nominations at the Golden Globes and Critics Choice Awards, you’d expect Peaches to easily land a spot at the Oscars, especially for the chance to see Jack Black perform the number.

Yet, that’s not going to happen, as the film was not part of the Academy Awards shortlists that dropped for multiple categories, including Best Original Song.

Peaches from The Super Mario Bros. Movie, performed by Black as Bowser, was not among the 15 shortlist songs. The list still had room for three songs from Barbie, two from The Color Purple, and two for Flora & Son. And as per usual, Dianne Warren was still in the mix somehow.

Many are looking at this as a massive snub, given that the song was a smash hit in 2023 and a favorite amongst other voting bodies. Jack Black even earned his first solo entry on the Billboard Hot 100 for the song, debuting at No. 83.

Even without the shortlist for the song, The Super Marios Bros. Movie is still expected to nab a nomination for Best Animated Feature.

The full shortlist for Best Original Song includes:

• “Am I Dreaming” from ‘Across the Spider-Verse’
• “Dance The Night” from ‘Barbie’
• “I’m Just Ken” from ‘Barbie’
• “What Was I Made For?” from ‘Barbie’
• “Can’t Catch Me Now” from ‘Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes’
• “Dear Alien” from ‘Asteroid City’
• “Keep It Movin’” from ‘The Color Purple’
• “Superpower (I)” from ‘The Color Purple’
• “The Fire Inside” from ‘Flamin’ Hot’
• “High Life” from ‘Flora & Son’
• “Meet In The Middle” from ‘Flora & Son’
• “Wahzhazhe (A Song For My People)” from ‘Killers of the Flower Moon’
• “Quiet Eyes” from ‘Past Lives’
• “Road To Freedom” from ‘Rustin’
• “It Never Went Away” from ‘American Symphony’

The Super Mario Bros. Movie features the voice talents of Chris Pratt as Mario, Anya Taylor-Joy as Princess Peach, Charlie Day as Luigi, Jack Black as Bowser, Keegan-Michael Key as Toad, Seth Rogen as Donkey Kong, Fred Armisen as Cranky Kong, Kevin Michael Richardson as Kamek and Sebastian Maniscalco as Spike.

Based on the world of Nintendo’s Mario games, The Super Mario Bros. Movie invites audiences into a vibrant, thrilling new universe unlike any created before in an action-packed, exuberant cinematic comedy event. While working underground to fix a water main, Brooklyn plumbers Mario (Chris Pratt; Jurassic World and The LEGO Movie franchises) and brother Luigi (Charlie Day; It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia) are transported down a mysterious pipe and wander into a magical new world. But when the brothers are separated, Mario embarks on an epic quest to find Luigi.

The Super Mario Bros. Movie is now streaming.
