James Gunn’s Creature Commandos lands an iconic DC villain

January 15, 2024 by EJ Moreno

James Gunn knows horror, so the first inclusion of iconic horror characters into the DC universe will be fascinating.

But with characters like Frankenstein and The Bride, Gunn is also staying true to DC roots with a Wonder Woman villain as the main foe.

We knew Anya Chalotra, who plays Yennefer of Vengerberg in Netflix’s The Witcher, had joined the cast. But During his usual fan interactions on Threads, Gunn confirmed that Chalotra would voice Circe in the series.

He adds, “There are other cool characters in the show played by other cool actors. But all of the series regulars were announced.”

The character is based on the Greek mythological figure who imprisoned Odysseus in Homer’s Odyssey. In DC, she is a wicked sorceress and recurring adversary of Wonder Woman. She made her first appearance in 1949’s Wonder Woman #37. She doesn’t only face off with the famous Amazonian; Circe also serves as an antagonist for other DC Comics heroes, such as Rip Hunter, the Sea Devils, and Superman & Supergirl.

All we know about Creature Commandos is the series will follow a team of heroes based on classic monsters. The series will feature the voice talents of David Harbour as Eric Frankenstein, Frank Grillo as Rick Flag Sr., Maria Bakalova as Princess Ilana Rostovic, Indira Varma as The Bride, Zoe Chao as Nina Mazursky, Alan Tudyk as Dr. Phosphorus, Sean Gunn as G.I. Robot and Weasel, with Steve Agee reprising his role as John Economos.

As previously reported, the Creature Commandos team works under the supervision of Amanda Waller. Viola Davis will return to voice Waller, but Agee’s John Economos will serve as her eyes and ears for this horror-based team. The Creature Commandos project is reportedly one of the “central pieces of the new DCU’s Gods and Monsters arc,” with the seven-episode show leading to future live-action appearances from the team of monsters featuring their voice actors in live-action versions.

Creature Commandos is expected to premiere at some point this year.
