Candyman’s Nia DaCosta in talks to direct second film in 28 Years Later trilogy

April 11, 2024 by Matt Rodgers

Candyman director Nia DaCosta is heading back to horror with the news that she is in talks to direct the second installment of Danny Boyle’s 28 Years Later trilogy.

Deadline report that DaCosta, who is coming off the back of The Marvels, is in discussions with Sony Pictures to helm part two of this new series of zombie (“they’re not zombies”) horrors. The intention is for the films to shoot back-to-back, with Boyle directing the first sequel later this year, and DaCosta’s film to begin production immediately after.

Alex Garland (Annihilation) is returning to write the films, with Cillian Murphy on board as a producer and potential star. Rumours have also surfaced that Jodie Comer (The Bikeriders) is circling a role within Danny Boyle’s zombie nation.

DaCosta made history by becoming the first Black female director to open at the top of U.S. charts when she successfully steered another horror sequel, Candyman, to stellar reviews and $77 million at the worldwide box-office.

2002’s 28 Days Later was made for $8 million, and went on to gross $85.7 million at the worldwide box-office. It was followed by 2007’s really-rather-good sequel 28 Weeks Later, which Boyle and Garland executive produced, but it failed to make the same kind of impact as the original ($65M WW).
