Arsher Ali and David Morse cast in We Were Liars adaptation

May 24, 2024 by Ricky Church

Amazon’s series adaptation of E. Lockhart’s We Were Liars has added Arsher Ali (Funny Woman) and David Morse (The Green Mile) to its ensemble cast. The announcement comes from Deadline and Variety, respectively.

Written by Lockhart in 2014, We Were Liars is “a tragic love story and an amnesia thriller set on a privately owned island off the coast of Massachusetts. It centers on the wealthy, seemingly perfect Sinclair family, who spend every summer on their private island.”

Ali and Morse join Mamie Gummer (True Detective), Candace King (The Vampire Diaries) and Caitlin FitzGerald (The Trial of the Chicago 7). They will play the three Sinclair sisters who bring their children to the family’s island.

Ali is set to play Ed, a man who is “magnetic, wryly funny and patient to a fault. Ed owns an art gallery in Brooklyn but spends every summer with his long-term partner Carrie (Gummer) and at her family’s sprawling summer compound. For nearly a decade, Ed has done his best to impress Carrie’s father, enduring not-so-subtle condescension, but this year, it becomes increasingly difficult for him to hold his tongue.”

Morse will portray Harris Sinclair, “the proud patriarch of the Sinclair family who built his fortune with a respected media empire. He abides by an endless set of life mottos: Be a credit to the family. Never discuss your problems in restaurants. All ailments can be cured by outdoor exercise. He is charming and warm — and always down to play a game of tennis with his daughters or his grandchildren, though he’s never once let them win. His private island off Martha’s Vineyard is his kingdom, and he reigns benevolently… or so it seems.”

We Were Liars is written and produced by Julie Plec and Carina Adly MacKenzie for Universal TV and Amazon MGM with Lockhart executive producing. The first episode will be written by Plec and directed by Nzingha Stewart (Daisy Jones & The Six) while MacKenzie will write the second episode.
