Dan Stevens in talks for Godzilla x Kong sequel return

February 3, 2025 by Ricky Church

The upcoming sequel to Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire may see a familiar face from the Monsterverse franchise as Dan Stevens has begun talks to reprise his role from the latest film.

Stevens joined the Monsterverse as Trapper, a veterinarian who worked for the monster agency Monarch who specialized in the Titans and was stationed at Kong’s site. Should negotiations prove successful for Legendary in getting him back, he’ll be the first returnee for the new film as Booksmart and The Last of Us star Kaitlyn Dever was cast last week, marking her first entry in the Monsterverse.

The Monsterverse first began with Gareth Edward’s 2014 film Godzilla before expanding to Kong: Skull Island. After crossing Godzilla and King King over in the latest films, Legendary brought the Monsterverse to the small screen in the Apple TV+ series Monarch: Legacy of Monsters starring Kurt and Wyatt Russell.

Grant Sputore will direct this new Godzilla x Kong title based on a script by Dave Callaham. Details are unknown, but it is described as “a continuation of the franchise centering Godzilla, Kong, and an assortment of other Titans.”

Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire brought in $571.9 million worldwide and became the franchise’s highest-grossing installment as well as the highest-grossing Godzilla film of all time. The Monsterverse has grossed over $2.5 billion to date at the global box office.
