Nick Frost in talks for Hagrid role in Harry Potter TV series

March 26, 2025 by Gary Collinson

As casting continues on the upcoming Harry Potter TV series, it looks as though Max may have found its Rubeus Hagrid for the hotly-anticipated adaptation, with Deadline revealing that Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Truth Seekers) is in final talks to take on the role of the gentle half-giant.

Assuming a deal is reached, the casting would see Frost stepping into the rather large shoes of the late Robbie Coltrane, who portrayed Hagrid in all eight of Warner Bros.’ Harry Potter movies.

Max is yet to make any official comment on casting reports regarding the series, although it has been reported that John Lithgow will play Professor Albus Dumbledore, with Janet McTeer as Professor Minerva McGonagall and Paapa Essiedu as Professor Severus Snape. A global casting search was also held for the series’ child leads, with over 32,000 youngsters said to have auditioned.

Filming on the Harry Potter series is set to kick off in the summer, with Francesca Gardiner (Succession, His Dark Materials, Killing Eve) serving as showrunner and Mark Mylod (Succession, Game of Thrones, The Last of Us) directing multiple episodes. Expect plenty more news over the coming weeks and months, and head on over to our socials @FlickeringMyth to let us know what you make of Nick Frost in the role of Hagrid…
