Sydney Sweeney and Jon M. Chu to adapt Split Fiction video game

April 26, 2025 by Ricky Church

Though Split Fiction was only released on video game platforms last month, a film adaptation is already on the way with Sydney Sweeney (Anyone But You) set to lead from director Jon M. Chu (Wicked).

Per Variety, the film will be adapted by Deadpool & Wolverine screenwriters Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. The game was released on March 6th for Playstation 5, Xbox Series X/S and PC with a release on the Switch 2 coming on the system’s launch date of June 5th.

Split Fiction “blends fantasy and science fiction, following a pair of authors, Mio and Zoe, who become trapped in the worlds they wrote.” The game quickly became a bestseller, selling more than two million copies within its first week. It has not been revealed which of the lead female roles Sweeney will portray for the film.

As well as starring, Sweeney will also executive produce with Chu producing for his company Electric Somewhere alongside Mike Goldberg and Dmitri M. Johnson of Story Kitchen, who are going to take the film to various studios in a hopes of sparking a bidding war.

This is the second video game-related project for Sweeney this week following the news that she is teaming with Michael Bay to produce an adaptation of the classic Sega arcade game Outrun.

Sweeney has insanely busy as of late as she expands into producing after the feature films Anyone But You and Immaculate. She will soon be seen in the Apple TV+ film Echo Valley, Ron Howard’s Eden and Paul Feig’s The Housemaid, with future projects including the third season of Euphoria, The Masque of the Red Death, the Sammy Davis Jr. and Kim Novak biopic Scandalous!, thriller I Pretended to Be a Missing Girl and the live-action Gundam movie.
