Sony Pictures and PlayStation Productions are reportedly developing a feature adaptation of one of their most intriguing and beautiful videogame properties in Fumito Ueda’s The Last Guardian.
According to videogame insider DanielRPK, PlayStation Productions are looking to add to their already impressive adaptation portfolio of The Last of Us, Until Dawn, and Uncharted by turning their attention to the critically-acclaimed fantasy adventure.
The Last Guardian tells the story of a young boy who awakens in ancient ruins alongside a huge, mysterious creature named Trico. The two form an unlikely bond, and working together must overcome obstacles and solve difficult puzzles in order to survive and discover the truth about where they are and what intrinsically links the two of them.
Designed and directed by Fumito Ueda (Shadow of the Colossus), and developed by Japan Studio and GenDesign, The Last Guardian was released in 2016 following over a decade in development. The game was met with middling reviews and low sales, but the characters and world-building were praised, which will be important when it comes to a cinematic adaptation.
