Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake sets March release with new trailer

November 13, 2025 by Andrew Newton

KOEI TECMO Europe and developer Team NINJA have announced that Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake will launch on PC and consoles on 12th March 2026. This remake of the classic 2003 Japanese horror adventure features enhanced graphics, sound and controls that provide a truly haunting experience. Watch the new trailer below to see more of these enhancements.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake has undergone a complete overhaul to make it look, sound and feel better to play than ever before. Graphical enhancements to the game include refined textures, striking lighting and shadow contrast to provide a more realistic atmosphere. The addition of spatial audio also helps provide a more immersive and haunting atmosphere.

The Fatal Frame franchise’s signature gameplay mechanic, Camera Obscura, has been reworked with filters, zoom and filter features, giving players a more intense experience during combat and exploration. The zoom feature is especially useful for those who don’t want to get too close to a spirit, or don’t want to break their cover when attacking. Zoom is also useful during exploration for taking photos of specific items.

Attacking wraiths when taking photos is still possible, but aligning the focus point with the target will inflict more damage. If the damage dealt can issue a certain amount, players can activate ‘Shutter Chance’ state, allowing them to deal significant damage with only one photo. Should players manage to trigger a Fatal Frame during a Shutter Chance state, they will then get to take several shots in quick succession.

The remake will introduce new features, including the ability to hold Mayu’s hand to recover Health and Spirit Power, the need to help Mio back up is she falls over, and the addition of collectible charms that can be equipped for a variety of effects.

Fatal Frame II: Crimson Butterfly Remake is available for pre-order now on Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and PC via Steam. Pre-orders on Nintendo Switch 2 will start at a later date.
