James Cameron says there will be four Avatar sequels

April 14, 2016 by Gary Collinson

James Cameron made a surprise appearance at CinemaCon today during the 20th Century Fox presentation, with the filmmaker announcing that we’ll be getting FOUR sequels to his 2009 box office behemoth Avatar. The filmmaker revealed that the plan is for each sequel to work as an individual story, but forming “a complete saga” together.

Prior to the release of the first movie, Cameron had suggested that he had plans for a further two sequels, before upping that to three in 2012. Avatar 2 was initially announced for release in December 2014 but has been pushed back several times, most recently to avoid Star Wars: Episode VIII. The current plan is for Avatar 2 to arrive in 2018, followed by Avatar 3 in 2020, Avatar 4 is 2022 and Avatar 5 in 2023.

Cameron has been chipping away at the scripts for the sequels alongside a team of writers in Josh Friedman (Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles), Shane Salerno (Savages), and Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver (Rise of the Planet of the Apes).

Production on Avatar 2 is expected to get underway this month, with Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang and Sigourney Weaver all confirmed as returning to the cast.
