The dust is settling on the domestic opening weekend for Captain America: Civil War, with the Marvel blockbuster debuting to $181.8 in North America, giving it the fifth biggest domestic opening of all time.
It had been predicted prior to release that Civil War could break the $200 million mark, although those estimates were lowered on Friday, with the film trailing rival superhero movie Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in terms of opening day. However, the Marvel threequel has went on to surpass the opening weekend of Batman v Superman, with Warner’s DC ensemble grossing $166.1 million.
Internationally, Civil War pulled in a further $220 million and is already at $678.4 million after just 12 days in play. Given the overwhelmingly positive reception from fans and critics, you’d have to expect the film to overtake Batman v Superman’s worldwide haul of $865.5 million by this point next week and a billion dollar plus take looks all but assured.
