Comic Book Review – Rat Queens #6

May 8, 2014 by Villordsutch

Villordsutch Reviews Rat Queens #6…

“THE FAR REACHING TENTACLES OF N’RYGOTH” Part One A brand new booze-soaked arc of Rat Queens reveals a growing menace within the very walls of Palisade. And while Dee may have run from her past, the bloated, blood-feasting sky god N’rygoth never really lets his children stray too far. FIRST ISSUE OF A NEW STORY ARC! PERFECT JUMP-ON POINT!

I’ve spoke highly, in the past, about Rat Queens and I have truly enjoyed how much the writer Kurtis J Wiebe knows his Dungeons and Dragons and also his gaming world.  He has clearly sat around in one to many online Teamspeak chatrooms in far too many mid-drunk failed raids and is using the material to make those say chatroom hangers-on smile. It’s just a shame that with the start of this new arc I’m putting on my grumpy hat.

My problem with this issue is that sod all seems to really happen until your past the first third of the comic; up until the story actually starts we get drunken sexploits and the talk of the party they’ve had the night before with booze and drugs and “titter-ye-nots” about a snapped off penis from the town’s statue.  Perhaps it’s the fact that I’m nearing an age where I should be classed as mature, but I felt this whole introduction to this issue dragged on that bit too long. Yes I understand these girls are a bit lairy and promiscuous but with the far meatier story that follows shortly after with Sawyer, Bernadette and Skull Face (I named him that), I felt slightly put out that I never got more of this.  Still we soon return to what makes Rat Queens that bit more fun than a fair few other comics around at the moment with the slaying, and eating, of the band of attacking Mushroom men and then the foul-mouthed banter with always raises a smile.  What follows is the name of the next month’s comic which is aptly titled, “Fuck!” and you’ll know why when the end comes; the ladies are to have the work cut out for them.

As always the artwork given to us by Roc Upchurch never fails to let us down throughout the comic, with no loss of definition and such power drawn within fight scenes – or just sheer violence especially in the bottling scene near the beginning.  Yet still he manages to retain the look of the Dungeons and Dragons heroes you’d expect to see in Dragonlance comics.

Once you get to the story this new arc smells like it’s going to be fantastic.

Villordsutch likes his sci-fi and looks like a tubby Viking according to his children. Visit his website and follow him on Twitter.
