A Game of Thrones spinoff is sounding increasingly likely

October 2, 2016 by Gary Collinson

With just two seasons of Game of Thrones remaining, there’s been a lot of speculation as to whether HBO will look to extend its stay in Westeros with a spinoff series – and judging from the latest comments from HBO programming president Casey Bloys, it’s now a case of when rather than if we’ll get a follow-up.

“There are things that sound interesting, but at this point, we have no writers assigned or anything like that,” said Bloys at the premiere of Westworld (via The Live Feed). “In a perfect world, Game of Thrones would keep going, and we wouldn’t have to deal with any of this… There are so many properties and areas to go to. For us, it’s about finding the right take with the right writer.”

Last month during the Emmy Awards, Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and D.B. Weiss ruled out their own involvement in a spinoff, stating that “for us, this is it”, and Bloys went on to address their comments, stating that:

“You’re getting them right when they’re about to embark on production. It’s a big, big commitment for them, not just their creative force, but also their family life. They’re gone for months at a time. So it’s a big, big thing. But should we find a property that makes sense as a spinoff or a prequel – whatever you want to say – I would not expect them to do it, because they’re going to need to decompress for a good amount of time, but it would certainly be nice to have their involvement in some way. At what level? I have no idea.”

As A Song of Ice and Fire author George R.R. Martin has previously noted, there’s certainly no shortage of material that HBO could mine for a spinoff. Are you excited at the prospect, and what would you like to see from the next series? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
