Doctor Strange tracking $65+ million domestic opening

November 3, 2016 by admin

After scoring a fantastic international opening, it looks like Doctor Strange could score a pretty sizable domestic number when it opens this weekend.

The Hollywood Reporter are saying that Doctor Strange is currently tracking $65-$70 million, but could do better. This means it will open ahead of Ant-Man, Captain America: The First Avenger, The Incredible Hulk and Thor in terms of Marvel Cinematic Universe movies, but will be in the bottom tier of comic book films in 2016. It will be way below Captain America: Civil War, Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice and Suicide Squad, but slightly ahead of X-Men: Apocalypse.

Doctor Strange will open against Dreamwork’s animated film Trolls, which is tracking a $35 million opening weekend.

So it looks like Tyler Perry’s Boo! A Madea Halloween will be dethroned after beating Jack Reacher: Never Look Back and Inferno.

Marvel’s Doctor Strange follows the story of the talented neurosurgeon Doctor Stephen Strange who, after a tragic car accident, must put ego aside and learn the secrets of a hidden world of mysticism and alternate dimensions. Based in New York City’s Greenwich Village, Doctor Strange must act as an intermediary between the real world and what lies beyond, utilizing a vast array of metaphysical abilities and artifacts to protect the Marvel cinematic universe.

Doctor Strange is out now in the UK and is set for release on November 4th in the US, with Scott Derrickson (Sinister) directing a cast that includes Benedict Cumberbatch (Sherlock) as Stephen Strange, Tilda Swinton (Snowpiercer) as The Ancient One, Chiwetel Ejiofor (12 Years a Slave) as Baron Mordo, Benedict Wong (The Martian) as Wong, Rachel McAdams (True Detective) as Christine Palmer, Mads Mikkelsen (Hannibal) as Kaecilius, Benjamin Bratt (The Infiltrator) as Jonathan Pangborn and Scott Adkins (Ninja: Shadow of a Tear) as Lucian.
