Steven Moffat responds to Benedict Cumberbatch’s comments that Sherlock series 4 could be “the end of an era”

December 18, 2016 by Gary Collinson

There’s just a fortnight to go until Benedict Cumberbatch’s Sherlock Holmes and Martin Freeman’s Dr. John Watson return for the fourth series of Sherlock, and there has been talk that this could well be the final run of episodes for the beloved show.

Back in October, it was reported that Cumberbatch had suggested series four “might be the end of an era”, but showrunner Steven Moffat has now responded to the comments, telling EW that the actor was misquoted – although he does stop short of confirming a fifth series is in the pipeline.

“This is really worth saying because it’s getting exhausting for us all,” said Moffat. “That’s not what Benedict said. That’s what someone edited his words into the meaning of. It seems to be impossible these days not to be misquoted. He was quite specific about being keen to carry on. He went on to say he’s hard to get us all together. We want to keep the quality up. We haven’t even seen this [season air] yet. We don’t know. We haven’t sat down with the intent to anything yet. But we’re always aware that it could be over. But the fact is Benedict did not say that.”
