Neil Marshall would like to direct a Black Widow movie

August 25, 2014 by Gary Collinson

Over the past few months, we’ve heard lots of talk about the prospect of a female-led superhero movie from Marvel Studios, with Kevin Feige confirming that there has been development on solo movies for both Ms. Marvel and Black Widow. Of course we have no idea how far along either of these potential movies are, but if Marvel is planning to deliver a solo movie for Scarlett Johansson’s Natasha Romanoff then director Neil Marshall (The Descent, Game of Thrones) has thrown his hat into the ring to take on the reins:

“I’d like to do a big movie with a strong female lead, whether or not she would be a superhero,” states Marshall, who has recently directed the pilot for NBC’s Constantine series. I’m more interested in characters like Scarlett Johansson in Lucy. I’m less interested in people with superpowers because I can’t identify with them. Very rarely do they get killed off, and when they do get killed off, chances are they’re going to be back . . . somehow. Yes, I’d love to do a big splashy movie with a great female lead, but it has to be someone I can believe in. I would love to do a Black Widow movie. That’s perfect, I would love to do that. That character is really interesting, she doesn’t have any superpowers, she just has extraordinary skills, and the world that she comes from, being this ex-K.G.B. assassin, I find that really fascinating.”

Would you like to see Neil Marshall directing a Black Widow movie, or should Marvel look to other characters for a female-led superhero movie? Let us know your thoughts…
