Ryan Coogler on where we’ll find T’Challa going in to Marvel’s Black Panther

November 23, 2017 by Amie Cranswick

After making his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut in last year’s Captain America: Civil War, Chadwick Boseman will be reprising the role of T’Challa this coming February as Marvel releases its first superhero blockbuster of 2018, Black Panther. And, during an interview with Deadline, director Ryan Coogler has been discussing where we’ll find the new king of Wakanda at the start of his solo movie:

“In our film, you find him at a time where he lost his father, the most important person in his life,” said Coogler. “He’s inheriting this incredible responsibility. He’s inheriting it at a time when Wakanda is struggling what its identity might be and the people have different ideas of what they should do. He’s incredibly conflicted but is aware of his responsibility of what to do.”

Black Panther won’t be the only time we see Boseman’s T’Challa next year either, as he is also set to reprise the role in May for Marvel’s hugely-anticipated blockbuster Avengers: Infinity War.

After the events of Captain America: Civil War, King T’Challa returns home to the reclusive, technologically advanced African nation of Wakanda to serve as his country’s new leader. However, T’Challa soon finds that he is challenged for the throne from factions within his own country. When two foes conspire to destroy Wakanda, the hero known as Black Panther must team up with C.I.A. agent Everett K. Ross and members of the Dora Milaje, Wakandan special forces, to prevent Wakanda from being dragged into a world war.

Black Panther sees Ryan Coogler (Creed) directing Chadwick Boseman as T’Challa alongside Lupita Nyong’o as Nakia, Michael B. Jordan as Erik Killmonger, Danai Gurira as Okoye, Winston Duke as M’Baku, Forest Whitaker as Zuri, Daniel Kaluuya as W’Kabi, Angela Bassett as Ramonda, Florence Kasumba as Ayo, Martin Freeman as Everett Ross, Andy Serkis as Ulysses Klaue, Letitia Wright as Shuri and Nabiyah Be as Nightshade. The film is set for release on February 12th in the UK and on February 16th in the States.
