George R.R. Martin reveals that his Nightflyers series will have a ‘substantial budget’

November 29, 2017 by Jordan Jones

A few months ago it was revealed that Syfy had ordered to series George R.R. Martin’s sci-fi novella Nightflyers. We don’t have any casting details at this time, though we know a pilot is being worked on by Jeff Buhler, who is most famous for the chilling horror classic Jacob’s Ladder. What we do know, however, is that the first season will definitely not have to worry about cutting costs.

Providing an update via his LiveJournal, Game of Thrones author George R.R. Martin talked about the upcoming shows budget, revealing that the show will have “a substantial budget, one that should allow them to create a show that looks as good as modern audiences expect.”

This most likely comes as a relief to the legion of fans of the author’s A Song of Ice and Fire series, who may have been worried that the jump from HBO to Syfy may result in a step down in quality. It’s good to hear that George, and company will have the proper funds at their disposal to do the book justice. Also, it being a novella, it will be interesting to see how many seasons they will stretch this out, and how much creative control Martin will ultimately keep throughout the show’s run.

Nightflyers is the first television adaptation of George R.R. Martin’s material since Game of Thrones, and the pressure is likely high to deliver something truly exceptional. A high budget will make that more likely, if not guaranteed.

Previously adapted to film in 1987, Nightflyers sees the crew of the titular ship racing to the edge of the solar system in order to contact any life which might be out there. As more and more dangerous events start to occur, the crew begin to question one another as they attempt to try and survive their journey.
