Rian Johnson explains the absence of the Knights of Ren in Star Wars: The Last Jedi

January 18, 2018 by Jordan Jones

Star Wars: The Last Jedi has had a lot of complaints levelled against it over the past month, and one of the chief complaints that SOME fans have had is that director Rian Johnson did not adequately address some of the lingering questions from The Force Awakens. For example, what’s up with the Knights of Ren, and where were they in The Last Jedi?

Recently, Rian Johnson was speaking with the Empire Film Podcast, where he was asked about the Knights of Ren, and why they weren’t included in the film. Here’s what the director had to say:

“You can see we have a very full movie already. There literally was just not room for another element at them. I guess I could’ve used them in place of the Praetorian guards, but then it would feel like wasting them because I knew all those guards had to die pretty quickly. And if Kylo had some kind of connection to them, it would’ve added a complication that wouldn’t have helped the scene. So the truth is I just didn’t see a place for them in the movie.”

That’s pretty fair reasoning. After all, it’s fair to say that no one would want an overstuffed film. Also, it’s important to remember that this is an ongoing story, and while it may be disappointing to have questions still lingering from The Force Awakens, there is still plenty of time to answer them. Besides, who better to address some of these plot points than the actual director of Episode VII?
