Could the 2014 Godzilla reboot contain more monsters than just Godzilla?

June 19, 2013 by admin

Following the image Legendary Pictures posted to their Facebook page earlier [see here], it looks like there is some more news coming from the 2014 Godzilla reboot.

The press release for the movie contains a lot of details about the merchandising and tone of the movie (taking it back to its routes etc.) but the most interesting line comes in the second paragraph which reads that Godzilla contains “spectacular creatures”. Note the plural on “creatures”.
Of course, we are speculating widely but it was assumed that the Gareth Edwards directed movie would feature the King of the Monsters riding solo (just like 1954’s Gojira and 1984’s Godzilla a.k.a. Godzilla 1985). Could we be seeing Godzilla take on one of his famous foes?

Warner Bros. Consumer Products (WBCP) has signed a slate of renowned global licensees, led by master toy partner Bandai America Incorporated, to capture the adventurous thrills of Warner Bros. Pictures’ and Legendary Pictures’ highly anticipated film Godzilla. Returning the character to its epic roots, Godzilla stomps into theaters on May 16, 2014, with a star cast including Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Ken Watanabe, Elizabeth Olsen, and Juliette Binoche with David Strathairn and Bryan Cranston.

Featuring spectacular creatures, thrilling action, epic battles, and a legendary monster, Godzilla provides the backbone for a monstrous merchandise offering for fans of all ages and enables compelling cross-category opportunities across mass and specialty retailers.

“We believe that our new theatrical film brings a bold new take on Godzilla that will energize and mobilize fans on a worldwide basis and like never before,” said Joel Chiodi, Executive Vice President, Theatrical Marketing, Legendary Entertainment. “This licensing program is an augmentation of the filmed entertainment experience, and while it will rally the powerful base, Godzilla the movie will introduce a whole new generation of fans to this franchise.”

Should this be fact, which of Godzilla’s enemies would you like to see him duke it out with on American soil? King Ghidorah? Mothra? Jet Jaguar??

Godzilla is set for release next year to coincide with the monster’s 60th anniversary and features Aaron Talyor-Johnson (Kick-Ass 2), Bryan Cranston (Breaking Bad), Elizabeth Olsen (Martha Marcy May Marlene) and Ken Wantanbe (Inception).
