Following the release of Star Wars: The Last Jedi, it was initially thought that director Rian Johnson had opted against including the iconic “I have a bad feeling about this” line from the movie, only for the filmmaker to reveal that it was present, albeit delivered by BB-8 in droidspeak.
However, while that tradition was honoured, it turns out that The Last Jedi did do away with another, as Lucasfilm’s Lucasfilm’s supervising sound editor Matthew Wood (a.k.a. General Grievous) explained to ABC News:
“In this movie, we decided to move from the Wilhelm scream. We’re letting the past die, as Kylo Ren says. We’ve started another scream that we like, it’s actually been in this film and Rogue One, and some other films that are not Star Wars-related. But it’s our own little calling card.”

The Wilhelm scream is a sound effect of a man screaming, which was first used in 1951 and has since appeared in over 400 movies, including every Star Wars film prior to The Last Jedi. Here’s its use in Star Wars through to Star Wars: The Force Awakens:

So, that’s the opening crawl, the Wilhelm scream… hey, at least we’ve still got severed limbs and R2-D2 and C-3PO appearances. Until Solo: A Star Wars Story, at least…
