US Box Office Report – Brad Pitt’s Fury topples Gone Girl with $23.5 million opening

October 20, 2014 by Luke Owen

Your US Box Office Report for w/c 20th October 2014…

Having closed the 58th BFI London Film Festival this past weekend, David Ayer’s World War II tank movie Fury has knocked Gone Girl from the number one spot in a solid weekend for the box office.

Starring Brad Pitt and Shia LeBeouf, Fury took $23.5 million over 3,173 screens, despite the middling reviews from some critics. This puts it on the right path to easily make back its $68 million budget, as it has yet to open anywhere else in the world.

Although having been knocked from its throne at the top of the charts, David Fincher’s Gone Girl had another good weekend at the box office, taking $17.8 million to bring its domestic total to $107 million. Gone Girl is now the fifth most successful movie from Fincher and should overtake Alien3, Panic Room and The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, but may struggle to beat Seven ($186 million domestic). Listen to our podcast review below:

Other new entry, The Book of Life, just missed out on the number two spot having earned $17 million but did beat last week’s third place Alexander and the Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day which took $12 million.

The final new entry this week was the latest “white people nearly kissing” adaptation of Nicholas Sparks, Best of Me, which took a disappointing $10.2 million. While that doesn’t seem bad compared to the $26 million budget, Best of Me is the lowest opening of a Nicholas Sparks adaptation, far behind the likes of Safe Haven, The Lucky One and The Notebook.

Last week’s number two Dracula Untold took a huge drop of nearly 60%, taking just $9 million to bring its domestic total to $40.7 million. The Judge also fell by around 40% with $7.9 million and horror dud Annabelle dropped a further 50%, also with $7.9 million.

Here’s your top 10 and their domestic totals:
