The Flickering Myth team react to the trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron…
Well, what a bombshell eh? It was announced on Wednesday that the first trailer for Avengers: Age of Ultron would be released next Tuesday during Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., but less than 24 hours later it leaked online (by Hydra apparently). Pressured by every website under the sun posting the leaked footage, Marvel released the full trailer themselves. Complete with TARDIS cameo…
So, we watched it. A few times. But what did we think?…
Ben Rayner: My reaction is simply the puddle of drool I am currently sitting in!
Villordsutch: The actual words I used after the the trailer would make me seem less articulate than I actually am. I can say however that I was honestly taken aback a little bit with what they’ve delivered in this trailer. After only watching Captain America: The Winter Soldier the other weekend I’ve seen that Marvel/Disney can deliver exciting yet darker Superhero movies and I think here we’re going to get a true stormer of a film.
J-P Wooding: I still think that The Avengers is the best Marvel film and that it may only be bettered by a sequel. It looks like that might just happen. One of the best trailers I’ve seen to lead you on. Never mind Ultron, I want to see what that Hulkbuster suit can do. I hope Kent and Wayne are watching. This will be the standard you have to beat, SuperBat!
Kris Wall: I’m a huge fan of James Spader’s voice anyway but it’s just so perfectly suited to Ultron. Finally seeing the Hulkbuster in action was awesome too. It looks to be going to some pretty dark places as well, some scenes reminded me of The Terminator 2‘s vision of the apocalypse. It’s also set an incredibly high bar for the Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice trailer to clear. Can’t wait to see it now!
J-P Wooding: It’s good to see that Stark’s ego is still running wild; most people make do with one of those Sumo suits. Not good enough for Tony though, is it? Remember Tony, Hulk smash!
Matt Spencer-Skeen: The tone of the movie is pretty clear from this trailer, I love that Marvel are making the shift between the first more light hearted Avengers and this totally clear. Also not only does Ultron sound awesome, he looks pretty badass too. Very excited.
Ben Rayner: Is it wrong that I’ve already watched it 5 times?
Kris Wall: Ha, 5 is nothing, if I added up all the times I watched the trailer for The Dark Knight Rises it would come to longer than the length of the film itself.
Ozzy Armstrong: Excellent trailer that really raised my interest a couple of notches. I don’t really know the story but I’m definitely intrigued as to what could take place. All I can say is bring on the release date!
Chris Cooper: After being disappointed that the Hulkbuster wasn’t in Iron Man 3, I must say I’m glad ‘Ivor’ didn’t end up being what we thought he was after seeing the real deal. I am very intrigued why Hulk is rampaging though, and he looks awfully veiny and red eyed. Controlled perhaps? Or just improved CGI? What makes Thor drop his hammer?!?!? Who is stood behind him at the tower? I have so many questions. The sign of a good trailer!
It is extremely cool, but it hasn’t blown me away. I’m not all ‘OMFG THIS IS TOTES THE BEST THING EVA!!!! xoxox’. It’s really good but I’m not sure I needed anything to push my excitement for it higher.
Anthony Donovan Stokes: This trailer actively addressed every flaw people had with the first movie color me ecstatic.
Gav Logan: The stakes have been raised and its clear that the sequel is going to be a lot darker and have a genuine sense that all will not end well. Very impressed!
Robert W Monk: Great trailer. Miles darker and pretty scary by the looks of it. Had quite a doomy, bleak atmosphere about it with talk of end of the road etc. (course it won’t be but nice to have that element of dread!) and props to the Spader vocals, of course.
Luke Owen: It’s the Empire Strikes Back of Avengers movies – everyone is f***ed. Trailer looks amazing. It tells you everything you need to know without spelling out the plot of the movie. The perfect teaser trailer.
Tom Jolliffe: I think stuff will blow up in this. I’m just getting a feeling from this teaser. Don’t quote me on that though. It looks good, even to someone who’s getting a little weary of all the spandex laden movies of late. I think like the first Avengers though, throwing everything into the pot is the way to go. It becomes like a kids toy box with a cherry bomb thrown in…erm…not that I know what that looks like…honestly.
Tom Roach: The trailer was great and I especially enjoyed hearing James Spader voicing Ultron. However I am concerned. This just seems a repeat of the first one. We have a villain doing a voiceover, The Avengers are at each others throats and then they will unite to defeat the villain. I hope this is just how the trailer portrays the film and not how the film will actually play out. Was also good to see the Hulkbuster armour which looks awesome and spotting Andy Serkis as well.
Matt Spencer-Skeen: I’m intrigued by the Andy Serkis shot, we see him in this but not the Vision? Makes me wonder on his importance.
Ben Rayner: It is only the first trailer in a 7 month wait, have to keep some stuff up their sleeve I would imagine…
Kris Wall: Did I mention that I really like the sound of James Spader’s voice???
Scott J Davis: Watched it, loved it. Dried off the Homer-like drool from my computer and chair. Repeated five, maybe six times…..
Jessie Robertson: Ultron’s voice just made it the hulkbuster armor will keep most fans drooling but that narration was spectacular. Have a feeling we haven’t scratched the surface either.
Rohan Morbey: Watched it, rolled eyes, closed browser.

Kris Wall: Not enough Tom Cruise in it?
Rohan Morbey: Kris, there’s never enough TC.
Ray Willmott: Chilling, harrowing, deep and dark. It’s early days but it looks like Whedon has done the impossible all over again. I will never watch Pinocchio in the same way again.
Kat Kourbeti: I was a little underwhelmed. The trailer seems almost formulaic, very similar to the first Avengers and Iron Man 3. Obviously I’m stoked, and I absolutely can’t wait to see it, but as a trailer it was very much same-old.
Alice Mary Rush: After reading the description of the trailer that went live at SDCC, I’ve been dying to see it properly and for me it did not disappoint. I have to say James Spader made that trailer for me. His voice was incredibly threatening. The brief clips of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch were great as well. All round fantastic.
Sadé Green: This looks amazing! Much, much darker than anything in the series so far. Loved the super creepy ‘Got no strings’ to accompany as well. I may have dropped my phone in excitement and smashed the screen but a smased screen was a small price to pay for the awesomeness.
Helen Murdoch: I was really happy with the trailer mainly thanks to James Spader’s narration. Good to see the Hulk Buster and a few clips of Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch. Pretty excited for this one!
David Fleming: James Spaders voice is soooo good. The movie looks awesome. Best. Trailer. Ever.
Kris Wall: I would say that Spader is in my top 3 voices with Bruce Campbell and Kevin Spacey
Anghus Houvouras: Why is everything brown? Why does Iron Man have to be in an Iron Man suit to get into his Hulkbuster Iron Man Suit? Why does Ultron have pupils? Why is Scarlet Witch screaming in slow motion? Why did they steal the ‘Got no strings’ bit from Gamer? Why does every movie featuring multiple Superheroes have to involve them fighting one another? Can’t these assholes get along for five minutes? I was underwhelmed by literally everything I saw except Andy Serkis as Klaw. Because Andy Serkis is awesome and Klaw would be awesome. Haven’t we had enough of a conflicted Tony Stark? Do we really need another superhero movie where heroes have to question what they’re fighting for? How many times can you copy/paste a movie before people start to lose interest? Based on Transformers, the number currently stands at 4.
