Untitled Universal Monster Movie set for April 2017

November 5, 2014 by Luke Owen

It was announced a few months back that Universal were planning a “Marvel-type” Universe with their classic Monsters that would start with the upcoming reboot to The Mummy, set for release June 24th 2016, making the first step.

Now Variety are reporting that Universal have put more pieces into place by blocking off April 2017 for the next point in the Monster Universe, only it’s unknown which monster it will be. Movies will then be made of each of their other properties before brining them all together for a monster mash, or even a remake of Monster Squad – although that seems unlikely.

Alex Kurtzman (Star Trek Into Darkness) and Chris Morgan (the Fast & Furious series) are overseeing this expanded Universe project with Kurtzman writing and producing The Mummy alongside Sean Daniel and Roberto Orci.

The Universal Monster Movies date back to 1931 with the release of Dracula starring Bela Lugosi. From there, Universal released movies based on Frankenstein, The Invisible Man, The Wolf Man and The Creature From the Black Lagoon. It is unclear whether Universal also plan to use the Phantom of the Opera or the Bride of Frankenstein in this new line-up of characters. Last month Universal released Dracula Untold, which was put into production before the plans for this expanded universe was announced. However, some have speculated that this could be the first step in the process, bringing Luke Evans’ Dracula into the present day to interact with the other characters.

Which Universal Monster would you like to see take the next slot?
