Super Smash Bros 3DS is the best-selling handheld game of 2014

November 15, 2014 by Tom Powter

Despite being released barely a month ago, Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS is already the best-selling handheld game of 2014 so far.

Super Smash Bros for Nintendo 3DS has managed to sell over 3 million copies worldwide since its release in Japan on September 13th, and joins nine other 3DS games that have broken the 1 million sales mark. In North America, the game has sold 1.2 million copies so far. Here is a breakdown of the ten 3DS games that have broken 1 million sales in North America:

  1. Mario Kart 7 — 3.62 million
  2. Super Mario 3D Land — 3.34 million
  3. New Super Mario Bros. 2 — 2.33 million
  4. Pokemon X — 2.11 million
  5. Pokemon Y — 2.03 million
  6. The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time 3D — 1.41 million
  7. Luigi’s Mansion: Dark Moon — 1.36 million
  8. Animal Crossing: New Leaf — 1.42 million
  9. Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS — 1.20 million
  10. The Legend of Zelda: A Link Between Worlds — 1.06 million

(Thanks, GameSpot!)

This seems to bode very well for the upcoming Wii U version of the game. Despite its success, Smash Bros 3DS will likely face very strong competition in the form of Pokemon Alpha Sapphire and Omega Ruby.
