Andy Serkis says Venom: Let There Be Carnage pushes PG-13 rating “to the very limits”

September 19, 2021 by Amie Cranswick

Despite bringing in one of the most ruthless and despicable killers in all of Marveldom, it shouldn’t have come as much of a surprise when it was confirmed that Sony’s Venom: Let There Be Carnage would be sticking with the PG-13 rating of its predecessor, rather than going all out with an R-rating.

The first movie grossed over $850 million worldwide (more than Sony managed with any of its solo Spider-Man movies), and as director Andy Serkis has revealed during an interview with IGN, the studio wanted to ensure it could reach as big an audience as possible with the sequel, whilst pushing the PG-13 rating “to the very limits.”

“You could go down an R-rated adult version of this,” said Serkis. “You could have done that with the last film. But we wanted to reach a big audience with this and… there are several rules you have to abide by. However, having said that, I think we have pushed to the very limits [with] the danger and darkness and the threat and the menace of Carnage.”

“Just because you don’t see so much gore – perhaps there’s not so much blood or seeing heads being bitten off – you can still suggest that,” Serkis elaborated. “The suggestion, leaving it to the audience’s imagination, can be just as powerful. I think that’s just what we managed to do. It’s certainly not shying away from the darkness. And the real heart of Carnage as a character isn’t compromised.”
