Annie Shapero cast as Alysanne Blackwood in House of the Dragon season 3

July 30, 2025 by Ricky Church

The third season of HBO’s House of the Dragon has filled a very significant role in the Dance of the Dragons war. Per Deadline, joining the series is Annie Shapero (Red Skies) where she will play Alysanne Blackwood, one of the most renowned fighters in Westeros history.

Known as Black Aly, Alysanne Blackwood is a “fearless warrior” and “Lord Benjicot Blackwood’s aunt and fights for Queen Rhaenyra Targaryen in the Dance of the Dragons before marrying Lord Cregan Stark, who is played by Tom Taylor. She becomes a legendary figure in House Stark lore.”

Blackwood will feature in a recurring role, starring in five of season three’s eight episodes which will premiere sometime next year.

House of the Dragon is a prequel to Game of Thrones and is based on George R.R. Martin’s book Fire & Blood which details the history of the Targaryen dynasty after they conquered Westeros.

Shapero joins fellow newcomers Tom Cullen, Joplin Sibtain, Barry Sloane, Tommy Flanagan, Dan Fogler and James Norton in the anticipated third season.

Based on George R.R. Martin’s “Fire & Blood,” the series, set 200 years before the events of “Game of Thrones,” tells the story of House Targaryen. Following King Aegon II’s coronation and the death of Queen Rhaenyra’s son, House Targaryen is divided in two. In King’s Landing, Aegon II rules from the Iron Throne, supported by Alicent and the Green Council, under the protection of the largest dragon in Westeros. From exile on Dragonstone, Queen Rhaenyra and her Black Council consider their next move. Civil war looms as both sides seek support from the great houses of Westeros, ultimately amassing armies — and dragons.

Season 2 stars Matt Smith, Emma D’Arcy, Olivia Cooke, Rhys Ifans, Steve Toussaint, Eve Best, Fabien Frankel, Matthew Needham, Sonoya Mizuno, Tom Glynn-Carney, Ewan Mitchell, Harry Collett, Bethany Antonia, Phoebe Campbell, Phia Saban and Jefferson Hall. Additional Season Two cast includes Abubakar Salim, Gayle Rankin, Freddie Fox, Simon Russell Beale, Clinton Liberty, Jamie Kenna, Kieran Bew, Tom Bennett, Tom Taylor, and Vincent Regan.
