Aquaman’s Yahya Abdul-Mateen II joins The Matrix 4 in lead role

October 11, 2019 by Gary Collinson

Having officially announced a return to The Matrix back in August, Warner Bros. and director Lana Wachowski have now kicked off the casting on the fourth movie in the sci-fi action franchise with Deadline reporting that Aquaman star Yahya Abdul-Mateen II has signed on alongside the returning Keanu Reeves and Carrie-Anne Moss.

Although it’s yet to be confirmed, Deadline’s article suggests that Abdul-Mateen could be playing a young version of Morpheus, who was originally played by Laurence Fishburne in 1999’s The Matrix and its 2003 sequels The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions.

Plot details on The Matrix 4 are being kept under wraps, and all that is known about the project so far is that Wachowski will direct from a script she has co-written with Aleksander Hemon and David Mitchell. The script is complete – with Keanu Reeves describing it as “very ambitious” – and filming is expected to get underway early in the New Year.

Abdul-Mateen was last seen on the big screen in Jordan Peele’s Us, and has the drama films Sweetness in the Belly, All Day and a Night and The Trial of the Chicago 7 on his upcoming slate. He also appears in the HBO series Watchmen, which premieres this month.
