Blumhouse eager to resurrect Jason Voorhees and the Friday the 13th franchise

October 2, 2023 by Matt Rodgers

Having worked their dark magic on the $500 million grossing Halloween series, and the forthcoming The Exorcist: Believer, Blumhouse Productions are turning their attention towards another dormant horror franchise in Friday the 13th.

While doing the rounds for this weekend’s Exorcist sequel, Blumhouse Producer Ryan Turek was asked by Inverse whether there were any other horror franchises they’d like to bring back from the the dead.

Turek responded by saying “Jason [Blum] and I are definitely in agreement that Friday the 13th is the thing we would love to get our hands on. I really want to go back to the basics. You don’t need too many ingredients for a Friday the 13th film. You need summer camp, you need campers, and you need Jason Vorhees in a mask.”

“Listen, I’ve gone on the record saying Halloween is the ultimate slasher film for me,” he continued. “That’s my favorite slasher film of all time. But Friday the 13th as a franchise is one that I just bow down to. I just love everything about it. And if we were able to live in both worlds, like we do with Halloween, then to be able to live at Crystal Lake for a while would be so incredible.”

It has been 14 years since Jason Voorhees strapped on the hockey mask in Marcus Nispel’s lamentable 2009 reboot. It still grossed $91 million at the worldwide box-office, which is testament to the popularity of the franchise.

A TV series entitled Crystal Lake is also currently in development from Bryan Fuller, Peacock, and A24, which will bring 1980’s Friday the 13th final girl Adrienne King back to the franchise.
