Captain Marvel isn’t like past Marvel origin movies says producer

May 17, 2018 by Samuel Brace

Don’t expect Captain Marvel to be a traditional Marvel origin movie according to the film’s producer.

With Avengers: Infinity War now safely in the wild, audiences are slowly starting to turn their attention to what comes next in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and this includes the 2019’s Captain Marvel.

Set to play a big role in the battle against Thanos in Avengers 4, Captain Marvel should be an important character in the MCU makeup but producer of the film Nate Moore has told Cinema Blend not to expect the usual type of Marvel origins story when the movie arrives in cinemas:

“I think there is a structure to origin films that audiences sometimes can get ahead of very quickly. So, if we do origin films, internally, we talk about how we can subvert that structure. For instance, Captain Marvel is an origin movie in that you haven’t seen her before, but we think we’ve stumbled upon a structure there that isn’t the traditional structure of what origin movies typically are, which is you meet the character, they have a problem, they get powers at the end of the first act, and the end of the second act they learn about the powers, the third act they probably fight a villain who has a function of the same powers. That’s a lot of times what a typical origin movie is structured like, but as we introduce new characters moving forward, we want to find ways to subvert that structure, so at least the experience of the film feels new to audiences. We’re very conscious of making sure that audiences don’t get things that feel like they’ve seen them before.”

This is, of course, something that is a big deal to fans and, as Moore notes, it will only become more vital that these origin stories feel new and unique as more and more characters get introduced into the franchise. We will see if Marvel is able to pull it off next year.

The story follows Carol Danvers as she becomes one of the universe’s most powerful heroes when Earth is caught in the middle of a galactic war between two alien races. Set in the 1990s, “Captain Marvel” is an all-new adventure from a previously unseen period in the history of the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Captain Marvel is being directed by Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck (Mississippi Grind) and sees Brie Larson (Kong: Skull Island) leading the cast as Carol Danvers alongside Samuel L. Jackson (The Avengers), Ben Mendelsohn (Rogue One: A Star Wars Story), Djimon Hounsou (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lee Pace (Guardians of the Galaxy), Lashana Lynch (Fast Girls), Gemma Chan (Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them), Algenis Perez Soto (Sambá), Rune Temte (Eddie The Eagle), McKenna Grace (I, Tonya), Annette Bening (American Beauty) with Clark Gregg (The Avengers), and Jude Law (Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald).
