In just five episodes Kidding has achieved all bar one of these serial milestones whilst managing to go meta with Conan. Aside from that this additional half hour of off kilter social commentary slash […]
Supergirl Season 4 Episode 1 Review – ‘American Alien’
Martin Carr reviews the season 4 premiere of Supergirl… There is more than a hint of Trump’s administration in this opener for season four. Alien emancipation acts, interspecies backlash and some big bad in the background pulling Machiavellian strings are just a few indications. Alien self-help groups gather in AA sized social circles to discuss […]
Kidding Season 1 Episode 6 Review – ‘The Cookie’
Martin Carr reviews the sixth episode of Kidding…There is so much invention beneath the surface of this show that knowing where to begin each week represents a huge challenge. Theological questions around existence lock horns with foul mouthed parakeets, while romantic entanglements and musical numbers break your heart. This show is no longer about divorce, […]
Daredevil Season 3 Episode 1 Review – ‘Resurrection’
Martin Carr reviews the first episode of Daredevil season 3…From out of the ashes and bomb blast rubble emerges a shell shocked and bleeding Matt Murdock. Concussed, hearing impaired and washed up on a derelict shoreline this is how we are thrown back in as our anti-hero hits rock bottom. Disillusioned, deserted and emotionally barren […]
Daredevil Season 3 Episode 2 Review – ‘Please’
Martin Carr reviews the second episode of Daredevil season 3…There are many different cages people choose to construct around themselves. Supergirl Season 4 Episode 2 Review – ‘Fallout’
Martin Carr reviews the second episode of Supergirl season 4…From the outside without digging any deeper episode two of this fourth season seems lacklustre, uninspired and devoid of a tangible threat. There are apparent enemies for our girl in Spandex to battle against but they feel insubstantial. For all the revelations concerning alien rights, alien […]
Kidding Season 1 Episode 7 Review – ‘Kintsugi’
Martin Carr reviews the seventh episode of Kidding…As metaphors go the direct translation of this title card seems apt for what Kidding manages to achieve each week. Personal anguish, professional complications and little caution from the writer’s room should make this mandatory viewing. Talking dolls, voice over recordings which segue into anti-Semitic tangents, combine with […]
Daredevil Season 3 Episode 5 Review – ‘The Perfect Game’
Martin Carr reviews the fifth episode of Daredevil season 3…There are elements here which are reminiscent of Lars Von Trier’s Dogville. Stripped back character work, theatrical spotlights and an immediacy which adds to the action by removing distractions. Parring it back to the bare bones not only illuminates Fisk’s analytical mind but gives us essential […]
