Why You Should Watch Mindhunter

by

Martin Carr on why you should watch Netflix’s Mindhunter…Released in 2017 to a muted fanfare Mindhunter represents another singularly personal project from David Fincher. This article was originally conceived as a series overview but has since morphed into something else entirely. My contention is that Fincher never set out to make a show with mass […]

Supergirl Season 3 Episode 6 Review – ‘Midvale’

by

Martin Carr reviews the sixth episode of Supergirl season 3…Prepare yourself for an episode of teen angst with teeth in a week of backstory which is designed to bring Kara and Alex together. However what starts out as a glossy and polished throwback to Dawson’s Creek grows a backbone, develops cojones and offers up another […]

The Orville Season 1 Episode 10 Review – ‘Firestorm’

by

Martin Carr reviews the tenth episode of The Orville…With more twists and turns than a Kubrick hedge maze The Orville delivers, surprises, engages and entertains without once dropping the ball. ‘Firestorm’ is by turns inventive, emotive and laced with subtle moments of humour which break things up without detracting from the overall structure. Every cast […]

Marvel’s Inhumans Season 1 Finale Review – ‘…And Finally: Black Bolt’

by

Martin Carr reviews the season finale of Marvel’s Inhumans…From its inception through to initial release on IMAX screens Inhumans has felt shackled, cumbersome and hard work. Marred by simplistic structuring which won it no easy converts and soon lost anyone else, this expensive exercise in corporate storyboarding did Marvel no favours.Too many cooks have left […]

Young Sheldon Season 1 Episode 3 Review – ‘Poker, Faith and Eggs’

by

Martin Carr reviews the third episode of Young Sheldon…Annie Potts inhabits the mythical Mee Maw of Sheldon’s childhood with style. Introduced as a fun loving, free spirited older woman this grandmother is not to be messed with. Babysitting in the loosest sense while Sheldon, George and Missy are let off the chain to run wild. […]

Young Sheldon Season 1 Episode 2 Review – ‘Rockets, Communists and the Dewey Decimal System’

by

Martin Carr reviews the second episode of Young Sheldon…At just over twenty minutes the makers of Young Sheldon are vastly underestimating the attention span of their audience. This window into the formative years of a Big Bang alumni is engaging, strangely nostalgic and anchored by an understated performance from Iain Armitage. Ably supported by Zoe […]

Supergirl Season 3 Episode 5 Review – ‘Damage’

by

Martin Carr reviews the fifth episode of Supergirl season 3…Morgan Edge is a nasty piece of work. Portrayed as a cutthroat industrialist with business savvy and media moxy, this sharp suited villain is giving Supergirl some gumption. Channelling malevolence through a polished people friendly facade we see a face-off with shared history, supreme confidence and […]

The Orville Season 1 Episode 8 Review – ‘Into the Fold’

by

Martin Carr reviews the eighth episode of The Orville season 1…This narrative segue might be old-fashioned, stereotypical and not without a blatant appeal to audience’s heartstrings, but it works effectively to put Doctor Claire Finn and Isaac together. Laying down a foundation of high-ranking, hardworking single mother ‘Into the Fold’ broadens our understanding, gives her character […]

Inhumans Season 1 Episode 7 Review – ‘Havoc In The Hidden Land’

by

Martin Carr reviews the seventh episode of Marvel’s Inhumans…As expected things move at a glacial pace and nothing of substance really happens. There is teleportation, regal stand offs and cloak and dagger missions which serve to get us from point A to point B but feel shiny yet flat. Any sense of progression is scuppered […]
