Disney+ cancels Willow series after a single season

March 15, 2023 by Gary Collinson

Variety is reporting that Disney+ has swung the axe on Lucasfilm’s fantasy series Willow, cancelling the follow-up to the cult classic 80s film after a single season.

Following on from the original 1988 high fantasy movie, Willow saw Warwick Davis reprising his role as Willow Ufgood, a sorcerer who sets off on another adventure with a new party of unlikely heroes.

The eight-episode series was developed by Jonathan Kasdan (Solo: A Star Wars Story), and premiered on Disney+ back in November. At the time of writing, neither Disney or Lucasfilm have made an official statement on the cancellation but we shall update the post once we have  official confirmation.

Despite the series’ cancellation, Deadline notes that “Willow remains an important IP in the Lucasfilm library, so it might be revisited in the future.” In what capacity, that remains to be seen.

An epic period fantasy series with a modern sensibility set in an enchanted land of breathtaking beauty, “Willow” began with an aspiring magician from a Nelwyn village and an infant girl destined to unite the realms, who together helped destroy an evil queen and banish the forces of darkness. Now, in a magical world where brownies, sorcerers, trolls, and other mystical creatures flourish, the adventure continues, as an unlikely group of heroes set off on a dangerous quest to places far beyond their home, where they must face their inner demons and come together to save their world.

Willow features the returning Warwick Davis and Joanne Whalley, along with Ruby Cruz, Erin Kellyman, Ellie Bamber, Tony Revolori, Amer Chadha-Patel, Dempsey Bryk, Talisa Garcia, Rosabell Laurenti Sellers and Ralph Ineson.

Willow is available to stream now on Disney+.
