Disney+ chief says reviving Netflix’s Marvel shows is “a possibility”

December 22, 2018 by Gary Collinson

Well, here’s a small glimmer of hope for fans of Netflix’s Marvel series, as Disney+ chief Kevin Mayer has suggested that the upcoming streaming service is potentially open to revivals of Daredevil, Luke Cage and Iron Fist following their recent cancellations.

“They are very high-quality shows,” said Mayer when asked whether Disney+ was considering reviving any of the series. “We haven’t yet discussed that, but I would say that’s a possibility.”

While Iron Fist’s cancellation wasn’t much of a surprise, Luke Cage and Daredevil had both been expecting to receive renewals, particularly the latter in the wake of its hugely-acclaimed third season. The fate of Jessica Jones and The Punisher remain unclear, although it is assumed that they too will receive the axe following their release of their next seasons.

Conflicting reports have placed the blame for the cancellations at both Marvel and Netflix’s doors, and while Marvel has claimed that Daredevil will return for more “adventures”, it has been revealed recently that the contracts for the cast and creative teams prevent them from reprising their roles for any non-Netflix productions for a period of two years from its cancellation.

Couple that with the fact that Disney+ has several of its own Marvel projects in the works from Marvel Studios, including Loki, Vision and the Scarlet Witch and Winter Soldier and the Falcon, and one would have to assume the chances of all of the Netflix shows being revived are slim to none. Still, perhaps we might see one or two of the Defenders making their return in some capacity, whether as the star of their own show or a supporting player in another? Let us know your thoughts in the comments below…
