Donald Glover reveals Community: The Movie script is finished

February 2, 2024 by Ricky Church

Our return to Greendale just got a little closer. Donald Glover revealed the script for the Community feature film has been fully completed by series creator Dan Harmon.

Glover revealed the news to Entertainment Tonight at the premiere of his new show Mr. & Mrs. Smith for Amazon Prime Studio. The series is a new take on the 2005 action comedy of the same name which starred Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie. In the series, Glover is joined by Maya Erskine as a pair of spies forced into a cover as a married couple, but they develop actual feelings for each other while completing high-risk missions.

At the premiere, ET asked Glover about the status of Community: The Movie, which was supposed to begin production last year but was delayed due to the WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Glover said “I was told that the script — literally, I was texting today — I was told that the script was done.”

He continued by saying “I haven’t read it yet,” but plans on reuniting with his Greendale study group. “It’s really just a schedule thing [but] I’m in. I’m all in.”

Glover portrayed Troy Barnes for five seasons of Community before leaving to focus on his music career as Childish Gambino and other films, such as his Solo: A Star Wars Story role as a young Lando Calrissian. The Community film will see Glover, Joel McHale, Alison Brien, Gillian Jacobs, Danny Pudi, Jim Rash and Ken Jeong return in their iconic roles. That leaves Yvette Nicole Brown as the only original cast member left out (other than Chevy Chase, who infamously caused lots of problems for Harmon and the cast on set), though Harmon has said he is working hard to get her back as well.

The Community movie was confirmed in October 2022, with Peacock also acquiring the entire series of 110 episodes of the Emmy-winning comedy, which will be available as part of its streaming library. In the meantime, Mr. & Mrs. Smith is streaming from today on Prime.
