Dwayne Johnson was never approached for Black Adam appearance in Shazam!

February 13, 2019 by Samuel Brace

Some fans may be disappointed to hear that the post-credits scene for DC Films’ Shazam! won’t feature Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam.

While there seems to be a fair amount of optimism surrounding DC’s Shazam!, some fans are certainly hoping that the film will also feature a cameo from Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam – who has been confirmed for the role since 2014.

However, we have now learned that Shazam! won’t be the moment Black Adam is introduced to the DCEU. During a preview for the movie, producer Peter Safran took part in a Q&A and was asked (via Screen Rant):

“From what I understand, Dwayne Johnson was available to do a post-credit cameo, but the issue was whether you guys could get a suit in time…”

Safran responded: “Complete myth. Everything about that – no, he might’ve been available. That’s the only thing about that statement that might be true. I don’t know if he was or not. But, no, there was never a conversation with him about a post-credits sequence. Truly, never.”

While it sounds like a post-credits appearance from Dwayne Johnson’s Black Adam was never really on the cards, Screen Rant is also reporting that the film may well include a nod to the character, as witnessed in some footage that was recently shown to the press.

According to the site, Billy Batson will discover from The Wizard that “he’s the last wizard alive from the now destroyed Council of Eternity [and ] that a long time ago they chose the wrong champion, who presumably led to their downfall. Rather than just tell the story, the Wizard permeates the room with magic, like a hologram, and shows the former champion over what appears to be Egypt.”

Asked whether this was a nod to Black Adam, a former Champion of the Council of Eternity in the comic books, director David F. Sandberg is said to have replied “You can read it that way if you choose to.”

We all have a superhero inside us, it just takes a bit of magic to bring it out. In Billy Batson’s (Asher Angel) case, by shouting out one word—SHAZAM!—this streetwise 14-year-old foster kid can turn into the adult Super Hero Shazam (Zachary Levi), courtesy of an ancient wizard. Still a kid at heart—inside a ripped, godlike body—Shazam revels in this adult version of himself by doing what any teen would do with superpowers: have fun with them! Can he fly? Does he have X-ray vision? Can he shoot lightning out of his hands? Can he skip his social studies test? Shazam sets out to test the limits of his abilities with the joyful recklessness of a child. But he’ll need to master these powers quickly in order to fight the deadly forces of evil controlled by Dr. Thaddeus Sivana (Mark Strong).”

Shazam will see Zachary Levi starring as the titular superhero, with Asher Angel as his young alter-ego Billy Batson, Jack Dylan Grazer as Freddy Freeman, Ian Chen as Eugene Choi, Jovan Armand as Pedro Peña, Grace Fulton as Mary Marvel, Cooper Andrews as Victor Vasquez, Faithe Herman as Darla Dudley, Mark Strong as Dr. Thaddeus Sivana, Djimon Hounsou as the Wizard, Adam Brody as Freddie Freeman, Ross Butler as Eugene Choi, D. J. Cotrona as Pedro Pena, Meagan Good as Darla Dudley, and Michelle Borth as Mary Bromfield. The film is set for release on April 5th 2019.
